James Cagney proved he can do a lot more than play gangster roles, and he did, when he sang and danced his way to winning the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Broadway star, George M. Cohan (1878-1942) in this musical autobiography featuring many of Cohan's songs including Yankee Doodle Dandy, Over There, You're a Grand Old Flag, Mary, 45 Minutes from Broadway and Give My Regards to Broadway. The movie would have been a lot better if it had been photographed in color instead of in that gritty black-and-white. Also starring Joan Leslie, Walter Huston, Rosemary DeCamp, Jeanne Cagney, Richard Whorf, George Tobias, Irene Manning, S.Z. Sakall, Eddie Foy, Jr., Frances Langford, William Davidson & John Hamilton.
