Tampico, Mexico serves as the location for John Huston's excellent screen adaptation of B. Traven's novel of gold, greed, paranoia and human nature at it's worst. Humphrey Bogart and Tim Holt are two hard-lucked American drifters, who join Walter Huston in an Oscar-winning performance as a grizzled old prospector on a gold-prospecting expedition into the mountains, but soon, they will confront a most familiar enemy: Greed! John Huston, who won two Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay Adaptation, also appears as an American tourist near the beginning of the picture. Look for a young Robert Blake as a kid selling lottery tickets.
