Howard Hawks' own version of Casablanca is based on Ernest Hemingway's "worst novel" marks Lauren Bacall's film debut and the first of four movies with then-future husband, Humphrey Bogart. Set in the Caribbean during World War II, Bogie plays a tough skipper-for-hire, who reluctantly becomes involved with the French Resistance, but becomes less reluctant with Bacall. Their legendary love scenes are the movie's best asset.
