Garbo: The Signature Collection

Greta Garbo made her first foray into talkies with the title role in "Anna Christie" (1930), based on Eugene O'Neill's play, as girl from Minnesota who tries to hide her past as a prostitute from her father and the Irish sailor she's fallen for co-stars. "Mata Hari" (1931), the famed Dutch spy who used her seductive charms for the Germans in World War I, is vividly portrayed by Garbo in a thrilling, if somewhat fictionalized, biodrama. Then, Garbo recruited former lover John Gilbert to co-star in "Queen Christina" (1933), about the fierce-willed 17th-century Swedish monarch who defied tradition, shunning a politically motivated arranged marriage to pursue true love. And, after starring in a silent adaptation in 1927, Garbo gave one of her finest performances as Tolstoy's tragic heroine, in "Anna Karenina" (1935). Fredric March is the officer who steals her heart, and Basil Rathbone is her husband. Ten-disc set also includes the German-language version of "Anna Christie" (1931), "The Garbo Silents Collection," "Grand Hotel," "Camille" (1936), "Ninotchka," and the exclusive documentary "Garbo." 20 3/4 hrs. total.
